The Lounging Sea Lion Pup

Came across this little fuzzy friend (California Sea Lion) while backpacking on the Lost Coast a couple months ago. I was super excited to see him, I mean, look how cute he is! He was loving the sun, rolling around like a crazy little cat or something.

The mothers nurse their pups for up to a year, nursing them for one or two days at a time, but then they leave the pup on the shore, while they go feed in the ocean, sometimes for days. So I'm guessing this little guy was just waiting for his mom to get back and feed him! He did look pretty content, such a cutie.

Cute! (But they sure smell, don't they? Fish breath!)

He's adorable, but I worry - isn't he pretty vulnerable, if mom leaves him alone on the beach for a couple of days?

Wren..I would worry too, but this spot (the Lost Coast ) is probably the safest place possible for these guys. It's the largest stretch of undeveloped coastline in the lower 48 ) and there really would be no land predators out to get him (the tides come really high! - we had to literally try to outrun them when we were there).

Yup, he looks like he's just soaking it all in. Fun shots.
