So, we're not headed to Mongolia this summer. This is a bummer and would have been a pretty awesome opportunity, but well, it didn't quite pan out. Long story but maybe we'll get the chance to go again at some point (ideally). Skywatch
So instead of Mongolia, we'll be spending the end of May, June, July and August in Truckee, CA in the Sierras. I worked there in 2007 and am pretty happy to be going back to the Willow Flycatchers. Lots of stuff to look forward to (like the field sites in the first two pictures, awesome sunrises, and baby WIFLS, below)
I haven't been in the field since July and have been craving field work for a while now, so I'm counting down the days until we head to the mountains. And Truckee is a pretty ideal spot fo spend the summer.
All these pictures are from 2007 with my point and shoot. The place is beautiful and there is excellent backpacking all over the place. This year we can bring our kayaks and paddle a bunch too, good stuff. And the work is pretty fun too :) So, that's the plan. (woohoo, a plan!). We'll know about if we're going to Mississippi in a couple weeks after Zac gets back from checking out the PhD gig and the area.

Wow! What a great way to spend the summer!!As for those bear tracks, uh...don't forget your bear bells and bear spray!!( but you likely know all that stuff!)
Looks like fun work and many journey's ahead to look forward to. Nice series of images, love the baby birds~
Mongolia would be quite an adventure but you could do worse than to spend a summer in the Sierra.
I guess we won't see your wonderful posts very often. It doesn't look like that are has very good internet service. I don't have it at the cabin either but I have heard that they have wifi at the library in Bridgeport, CA. Maybe I'll try that.
I'm glad to hear you have cured your insanity! I've always lived by the motto "You never see a motorcycle parked outside a therapists office"!
Summer in the Sierra's sounds like mighty, mighty fine plan. I'm really looking forward to seeing some of your field work. If it's anything like today's post, it will be a blast!
Well at least you have field work and know where you are headed. Spending the summer in the Sierras sounds great to me.
That sounds almost as good as Mongolia to me...maybe even as doable! Look forward to your amazing photos and posts.
Terrific photos! That first photo is incredible, and the second is my favorite kind of terrain. I certainly wouldn't mind spending a summer there.
Truckee is a cool place. I grew up in Modesto and spent time in the Sierras most every summer. Some of it around Truckee...
Sounds as though you'll enjoy your season!
beautiful photo's!!! looks like a lovely place.
The sounds like fun. Haven't been to Truckee in ages. Nothing like photographing on-location.
I have bear bells from our trip to Yoho National Park in Canada...I have been putting them on my Christmas tree (until I need them again). I should have had them in Yosemite, since there were warnings all over that the bears are VERY active now. Wow! Mongolia! That would be amazing. But, the Sierras...what a great alternative.
I just love those baby birds. How beautiful!
Sounds (and looks!) like a bit of heaven to me.
I love the two top photos! I think you would take wonderful pictures where ever you go.
I know it's not Mongolia, but Truckee and that part of the Sierra is also very pretty (if not exotic :D).
Would wait for your photos from Truckee.
Great pictures an what an adventure! Where in MS are you possibly go?....Christine
Wow.. amazing shots! Nice place!
wow, what adventures. Looks like you had a nice time:)
beautiful Landscape photos. The mountains are increadible. And so cute birds, so small.... and the bear tracks...dont you get afraid?? I would, I think...Never seen a bear, never been to a place where there are bears, so it would been a big adventure to see one ;)
Fabulous pictures! I was wondering if you would be going to Mongolia and kept checking your posts. But hey, spending four months in the Sierras sounds pretty good to me. I look forward to seeing posts from your time there.

Wow you have a beautiful view in there. Happy WW!
Mongolia sounded nice, Jill, but this is looking like an acceptable replacement. Actually, like a pretty damn nice replacement.
Good for you on getting back out in the field. Sounds like the stir crazies were setting in--or would have been for me. I can't wait to see what gems you come across in the Sierras.
Fabulous moody sky shot.
I love the rainbow one.
Nice shots, and I love Truckee!!
Yes, Mongolia would be wonderful, but this sounds like a great opportunity, too! The Sierras are beautiful, too! Your photos are fantastic as always, Jill! Love the little birds and your first shot is gorgeous! Hope you have a great weekend!

Wonderful shots, especially that first one. Glorious..
Great series of photographs....in the first one I almost hear "TA-Da" as the Sun rises in the Eastern sky...anouncing the day.
Some of us would sell our souls to spend the summer in Truckee! Sorry about Mongolia, but the Sierras would always be my first choice anyway. I'm glad I found your blog through Skywatch Friday, and love the photos.
Wonderful post! The sky looks absolutely gorgeous in the first pic. What a shot!
