Starfish Eatin' Time

Glaucous-winged x Herring Gull. That's what species Zac and his mad gull skills determined as far as this sir goes. I have attention span issues when it comes to gulls and identification, but Zac knows these things. Bird Photography Weekly, Face of the Week, Watery Wednesday
We saw him at the Crescent City Harbor this morning snarfing this tasty treat of a starfish. I love watching gulls eat starfish. It's quite entertaining, and looks rather painful. Same thing with birds with skinny necks eat giant fish. Ouch, but they know what they're doing.
I kneeled in the wet sand for a while, slowly creeping up on this guy. Luckily, he was pretty cool with it, and I thank him.
We also saw a bunch of sea lions and some freaking beautiful wild orchids today, but more posts on those things later!

Whoa! Isn't that a very big bite! That's one great find and I love the series...did he ever eat it?

yes, I watched on on TV news, there were a zillion star fish beached on the shore. Did you see them?

When you come to New Zealand, I will take you creek walking. Though you have to wait for a while, my old body is still aching from the punishment.

Great observation, wonderful set of photos! Yes, seagulls love to eat starfish indeed. There are lots of seagulls in my neighbourhood located on the seashore and a couple of days ago I saw a dead starfish ... on the grass ... in the park! It seems a seagull had dropped it! :-)

Have a delightful Sunday, ciao! :-)

Jill: That is one big bite, nature shown to us at its finest. What a neat seagull.

Oh, looks like the gull having trouble to swallow that starfish. Great captures. What an experience for you to be able to capture those moments. I haven't seen any bird that eats starfish yet.
Have a great week ahead. Thanks for always visiting my blog.

You may have attention span issues on the exact specie, but clearly not when it come to getting the shot, these are great! I don't often see starfish here on the east coast. Maybe it too populated around these parts.

Bird digestive tracks are pretty agressive but I would have to imagine that a gull would have to be pretty hungry.

Great photos, Jill. You were amazing to get that close without spooking the gull. Apparently your patience and attention span do just fine when its worth the effort.

BTW, I have enough trouble with gulls when they are simply one species. Cross breeding is simply not fair, but thank Zach for the idea on our behalf.

I never would have thought gulls would eat starfish! I will have to watch for that the next time I'm at the coast ...

Those are really great photos. Gulls seem to eat whatever they can get. I agree that ID'ing the different kinds is extremely difficult. I visited Washington State a few years ago and was completely confused with the different species and plumage.

What a mouthfull! Isn't it amazing what some birds are able to swallow. I've watched great blue herrons swallow fish that I would have sworn was totally impossible but like you say, they know what they are doing.

Great series of photos amazing what they will eat.

They eat them whole? I guess they would have to without a knife being available...ouch....

No I haven't seen them eat starfish either. Usually the ones I see up close are trying to nab my chips n fish. Cool pics again.

Wow that's different, I didn't know they ate star fish. And this guy doesn't look like he is hurting for food either! Great face of the week! Thank you so much for participating this week! Really appreciate it!

Great series Jill! This is something I have never seen either, I suppose because I don't go to the coast that often. It looks like this bird had a tough time trying to down that starfish though. Did it ever get it down?

Marvellous series of photographs. I wonder how long it took to ingest the starfish. Maybe such a large meal keeps a bird going for a long time! (Doesn't seem to work with this bird;-))

Something I have never even thought of before, let alone seen! I love the series, and some of the photos could definitely stand alone!

What a great series, looks like it was a bit too much for him to swallow.

My only attempts at gull id, if it's at Mono Lake I assume it's a California gull

Fabulous shots. That's quite a meal it's got. You must have an amazing lens on your camera. Your shots are so crystal clear.

Thanks guys, watching gulls gulp down a starfish is pretty cool..This guy did eventually get it down, after spitting it out a few times. I've them eat them really easily in the past but usually it takes them quite a while :)
