Sluggers

Oh...the banana slug. It's so weird! But I like these odd little fellows. I did gain a love/hate relationship with them however when I found one this fall eating a dead baby bird. That was disturbing. I mean, i knew they gorge on gross stuff, but a baby bird never crossed my mind. Despite that isolated incident, I love watching them eat. It's a dirty process since you gotta lay down on the usually muddy, wet ground to stare at them (and take their picture) but they are pretty fascinating. Apparently slugs don't sit well with some people, come on! look at their little goofy faces, don't deny it...they're cute!
(on a side note: the insane house we lived in last year...during my insomnia moments I'd go make tea at 2 am and there would be (not banana) slugs crawling up the walls behind the stove. really? that's bizarre.) Mellow Yellow and Macro Monday, Face of the Week

Your photos are fantastic as always -- they'd have to be to make this guy look so interesting! Hope you're having a great day, Jill!

I'm not so sure I would use the word "cute" for a banana slug. I'm not sure what word I would use...hmmm. But, your capture of this "amazing" guy is incredible, especially since you have to get down in the mud to be eye to eye! You are a real super trooper, Jill!

At my last place in Arcata ("The Ashtray"), I would totally find slug trails in my kitchen all the time....never found the culprit though.

Okay, so is it a slug ... or a slimy alien invader with huge eyeballs-on-sticks ???

This is a wonderful close-up. I really love these!

Yep, I am going to have to agree - definitely cute! Love that first photo.

Okay I posted and it disappeared.
So here it is again, cute is as cute does. He sure is yellow, he doesn't look slimy, you are a good person to get eye to eye with a slug, and the photos are great.

For goodness sake don't eat one by mistake! They actually look succulent up-close!

Great stuff Jill. Wonderful color. I ordered a used DR-4 right angle viewer for my F3HP from B&H that is due to arrive Tuesday. Screw that bad boy onto my viewfinder and I'll be able to get low without the mess.

A banana slug
is not much good for eating
till he’s done feeding—
then what a tasty morsel
for those who crave his dorsal!

(Hey! Rinkly Rimes says the little guy looks succulent!)

He is better looking than the slugs that hang around the hostas here.... at least I haven't seen them on any dead animal. Great photo.

You have done a great job of photographing these. Although I am happy to say that we don't have slugs where I live.

i always liked snails better than slugs. what's that about? the shell seems to make them less gross. ha.

I love the banana slugs. We don't see so many here in the city but in the forest trail on a wet day - for sure.
Your photos are fantastic and make them a thing of beauty.

Urgghhh!!!! *Shudders*

Put a shell on him and he'd be cute. What's up with that anyway? I love snails, and yes, watching them eat is fascinating, but slugs make me go cold. Weird!

Your macros are amazing, beautiful processing. I remember them as ugly, washed out creatures but now I am not so sure.
Great work again.

snails seem cute to me, slugs, not so much. maybe it's the name.
though I have to say your photos are very flattering!

Hey Jill! Gotta' tell ya, that's one thing I never expected to see on Mellow Yellow. But I like it, except maybe the baby bird part.

Spent many years in Eugene OR area and frequently visited OR and NCal coasts, so am familiar with these and the plain old brown variety, but I don't think I've ever looked at one so carefully. Great pix.

SquirrelQueen said...

I think they are fascinating creatures but in all the time we lived in the area I never saw one in my kitchen. Love your photos, great macros.

It is a very pretty colour but I don't really care for slugs. I quite like snails though - but not in the house.
Beautiful photographs, as ever :-)
