Prairie Creek

Last weekend we (Zac, my brother, and I) went back up to Fern Gully/Canyon in Prairie Creek State Park (part of Redwoods National and State park). Things were a little greener and a little wetter than last time we were there (October). Despite the rain, much fun was had. I think the rain added to the experience. Plus, no one else was there - sweeeet!
The water was a little higher than last time and the fallen trees and sticks used to get across weren't always so trustworthy - part of the fun! So, we all had self diagnosed trench foot (eww!) by the time we were done. But hey, that didn't stop us. Abc Wednesday (P), Watery Wednesday
I really love this spot, even though it drags in a good amount of tourists in the summer I'm guessing. The canyon walls are covered with ferns and other brilliant greenery. Last time, I hiked in the 5 miles to get there and that trail is pretty great too. This time, because of the rain, we drove around to the beach and just walked the few minutes to the canyon from there. An elk herd was ...right there. A little too close when we got out of the car. I tried to get a few shots but the rain was pretty heavy and it wasn't working. Either way, they were pretty snazzy and seemed to be enjoying the usual North Coast weather. (I am easily excitable, below)

Is that moss growing on the tree trunk? is it slippery?

Oh my, that is so wonderfully green.
I love hiking in our forests here just for the moss and the green. Gorgeous photos as always. Nice to see a spot of happy red, too!

Its been years since I was there. Thanks for the memories. My Hubby and I felt like we had found our own magic fairyland when we visited. I think the rain and wet just added to the allure of the place.

Splendid out door scenes -- It reminds me of the Olympic National Rain forest a little in Washington State.

Ah 40 shades of green is quite wonderful apart from the wet that produces it:-) Moss is something I always have to touch, beautiful.

Hi Jill, Prairie Creek is our favorite place to camp on the coast and Fern Canyon is awesome. We've been there twice in Winter and it just doesn't get any better - no people, just elk!

another splendid series from you Jill. Two thumbs up here.

What a gorgeous place!! I'm guessing 'wet' is a common condition for the area if the moss and ferns are anything to go by!

Just look at all the green!! So tranquil. I'd love being there with you next time you go.

We went birding last week...today's post for my blog is all kinds of coastal bird photos. Do take a side trip over to my place if you can find some time to view many waterfowl.
