Yellow-headed Blackbird

This juvenile (female? pretty sure it's a male juvenile)Yellow-headed Blackbird was a little confused. He was hanging out in White Sands, New Mexico, which is a little different than his usual haunts (freshwater wetlands). He decided to stop in a gypsum sand desert void of water. Interesting decision. But he seemed to be making do, trying to forage on seed (check out the last photo) from what little vegetation there was. I was glad to see he was gone in the morning, he probably took off for his wintering grounds sometime during the night. He was a welcome surprise though - White Sands isn't necessarily thriving with birds. And YHBLs are pretty cool. Shadow Shot Camera Critters SOOC Bird Photography Weekly Mellow Yellow

He's a pretty boy, even if he was a little displaced from his usual territory. Great photos.

nice color on that blackbird.

I noticed you turned 30. Congratulations! But you are still on the young side of things. A long life to enjoy. :)

How delightful that he chose where you were to take a much needed break from his travels. Beautifil little chap, I had not seen any images of them on here from anyone ever, so a new bird to have viewed. Have a great weekend~

Great photos! White Sands isn't too far from the many refuges along the Rio Grande, maybe he/she wandered a little, looking for a change of scenery. I do that a lot, and being freom Northern Wisconsin, New Mexico has been on my list of places to go in the long cold clutches of Winter. I've been traveling there for over 20 years. I'll look for your friend.

peace.

I see them on a marsh in NW Iowa. They share with the Red-winged, but their color really stands out more.

What a gorgeous bird! We certainly don't have those around here - we just have the Red Winged.

Glad to hear he decided to move on to where he can thrive. LOVE that last photo!

What a fabulous bird! Diminutive in stature, the shadow adds a wonderful heft to this lovely avian. A great capture!

Gorgeous photos. I love yellow birds! We only get the finches here but they always stand out and we're happy to see them.

Poor lil guy could only find a dried up bit of grass, so it's a good thing he decided to continue on. :)

have a great day!

It would be hard to miss this striking bird against the white sand. I've only seen a few, the first was in the Grand Canyon.

Poor little fellow!! I hope he makes it back home! It is probably a long journey, but hopefully cut short enough by his brief stopover, to make it possible. ~karen

I've never seen a yellow-headed blackbird before, even in pictures. Thank you. It almost looks like sunset is reflecting off the cutie bird, rather than the color being part of it. Awesome! The bird and your photos.

Poor pretty little thing, that certainly is not a land of plenty he has landed in. I hope he found enough food to carry him on to the next stage.

Wonderful colors - maybe the bird knew that it would make a nice contrast against the white sand...
