Aransas National Wildlife Refuge

(Least Grebe)
Zac and I were at Aransas National Wildlife Refuge recently to scope out Whooping Cranes (saw 2 of 'em, life bird, big bird, awesome bird). I think we had around 70 species for the few hours we were there. Lots of alligators too. And four different snake species, sweet! As much time as I've lived and spent in Texas, I had never been to Aransas before, which is just ridiculous really. Here's a few bird buddies. Gators and snakes later. What wonderful birds you found! I can't wait to see the rest (not so sure about the alligators though).

Merry Christmas!

My 1st time there I had a lady who knew all there so i pestered her to death. Nice to have a book on hand, many of the species I don't see around here.I love that area for diversity.

AWEsome. When I saw the whooping cranes at Aransas, through huge scopes, they were still so far away they were distorted by heat waves, but WOW they were HUGE. As in Jurassic huge. Nice!

Great photos! Especially love the second one with the killdeer and the rings around it! I have never even seen a photo of one before!

That least grebe is about the cutest thing I've seen in a long time, and I love the killdeer, too.
Best wishes from western Canada.

Yippee! Aransas NWR. My favorite escape. Whoopers in winter, gators all year, and a menagerie of flora and fauna to keep me spellbound.

Beautiful photos, Jill! I'm glad you enjoyed your visit.

Jill -- I loved this post! we spent three winters/springs at Port A -- it is one of my favorite EVER places. (We took a boat out to look at the wonderful Whoopers each time.) The first time there we stayed at Tropic Island RV Park right across the street from that one birding place -- it was wonderful. One morning I woke up to a backyard full of lazuli buntings. (No camera, pre-blog, but etched in my memory!)

Thanks for sharing your birds. Go back in April for the migration!!!!!

Nice shots. I haven't been out "walking" and taking shots in a while. This makes me miss it.
