Trillium!

The western (or white) trillium is blooming! We haven't been here in the spring so this was exciting for us. Beautiful flower. We saw about 8 or 9 of them. Also saw about 11 snakes and a skink (need to identify later). I picked one up but it squirmed quickly away the second I put him down. Twas an eventful little hike. Now I am off to go see some horses! Macro Monday and Mellow yellow, Today's Flower

Horse Mountain

Since we live on the California coast, there was a tsunami watch today. We both figured it would be nothing but there were signs all over saying not to go to the beach. Which was a bummer because we had beach plans and it was super duper nice out. So, we took drastic measures and went up five thousand feet to Horse Mountain, since we'd never been there before. The sky was crazy blue coming from the northwest and the visibility was pretty spectacular today. We hiked around for a little while and then came back to the coast.
We still had a few hours of daylight so we tried to go to Moonstone and Luffenholtz beach but noooo, they had closed them off because of the nonexistent big waves. I guess the ocean looked a little angrier than usual but I've seen it a whole lot meaner than that!
So, then we went to the marsh but it had gotten pretty windy and chilly and we were wimpy so we didn't spend a whole lot of time there. We gave it one last go at the Virginia's Warbler in Arcata. I finally saw it (yay!) and managed to get an okay shot. (Post below) The guy below is a Green-winged Teal. ..A full day of sun! I like it! Blue Monday and My World Tuesday

Virginia's Warbler

This Virginia's Warbler (rare for Humboldt) has been hanging around for a couple months now. But since I was out of town a good chunk of that time, I just finally saw her (unless it's a male subadult) . Actually, it took try number 4 to get a look at it. And then I was painfully determined to get a photo. This proved pretty difficult since she was hanging out 1 foot off the ground in some crazy thick blackberry thorny bushes. (yeeouch, thought i was gonna lose an eye). Not an ideal shot, but hey, it works well enough! She's a cutie. Bird Photography Weekly

Oh! Also, my blog was included on the "50 Amazing Nature Photography blogs" ! Thanks to those involved with that, and I'm pumped people appreciate my photos and blogging. Thanks :)

The Hostel

A lovely hostel we stayed at in Liberia, Costa Rica. And by lovely I mean sketchy, but it made for some interesting photos! Shadow Shot There were abundant cockroaches and the wall stopped about 3/4 of the way to the ceiling.
The hangers were hanging from a rickety metal thing (glad I had an updated tetanus shot) sticking out of the wall (no closet). There was also a rocking chair lacking a seat. There was some odd odor permeating throughout as well. It was pretty awesome. We laughed in amusement (and horror a bit too, I might add) when we opened the door. The bathroom down the hall was not some place you wanted to hang out for very long - holy lots of bugs ALL over the place! However, despite the peeling (probably lead) paint, there were some great colors in that little place and the hallway had all sorts of character.
I believe there was only one other person staying there. We payed, if I remember correctly, 16 US dollars to stay there a night. Good stuff :) You can see the one light in the room...hanging by a thread and not offering a whole lot of light. The Costa Rican Lonely Planet guidebook might want to access their wording of this place! I should dig it out and find the description, ha! So glad we had the sleeping bags because there was no way we were touching those sheets, yikes!

Valdez Harbor

A scanned photo from my Nikon film. Valdez harbor, Alaska. The batteries to my camera had died, I took them out and put them back in and was able to get one last photo. I have this one framed, one of my favorites :) Weekend Reflections

Gypsum Everywhere

This week I've been in the process (wait, I'm still in the process) of updating my photography site and organizing photos (long process, I should be more organized). This is White Sands National Monument from late June 2008, about 10 days after we got the Canon Rebel (now I've got the 7D). I love this photo and I love White Sands...must...go...back..soon! Jumping off those dunes for hours on end and in the middle of the night with a full moon might possibly be on my top 5 favorite things ever. Scenic Sunday, Monochrome Weekend

Marsh Sunset

These are taken the same day as these ...The sky was all sorts of wild colors before I got these pictures. Unfortunately, the clouds covered the sun up before I could get to a good spot to get the photos I wanted (I was mildly bitter about this). But, even so, I like a couple of these. Like I mentioned in the other post, these were taken at the Arcata Marsh and I had to work pretty hard at not getting power lines, cars, etc in the photos. Ah, side note, actually the last picture is taken earlier in the day at Hookton Slough.
Soooo happy that it doesn't get dark at 5 pm anymore! Skywatch Friday

Trinidad and Tobago: Last Day

Last post for Trinidad and Tobago. Jan 12 (Day 13), we spent the vast majority of the day at the Pigeon Point beach. Our last day we went back to Pigeon Point and also to the wastewater treatment ponds (romantic, right?). Lots of bird action there, including a Striated Heron, which is apparently quite rare for Tobago (but not Trinidad). That's the really crappy picture at the bottom. I said I'd put a list (that's so nerdy) up of the birds we saw, maybe I'll get around to that. Perhaps. Here's some crazy looking anhingas. Their necks kind of weird me out, then again, necks in general weird me out. Also a green heron and us on the beach with the awesome water...sighI miss the sun and the heat, badly. I don't think seasonal depression is a joke. Outdoor Wednesday

Alien Grebes, Otter Tracks, and a Lamp

The sun! It came out pretty much all day yesterday! Pleasant surprise, I'll say. We went to Hookton Slough, Humboldt Bay NWR, and the South Spit to see what was up. Just before it got dark, we went headed to the marsh. Not a whole lot happening bird wise, this western grebe decided to have his picture taken before he took a dive. I walked out on the boat ramp and he popped up about a foot from me - we were both surprised! The willet, below, strolled the shore and then snagged a crab. ( I gotta say, the blue water makes for a much prettier background than the mudflats) My World Tuesday and Watery Wednesday
While trying to sneak up on an osprey at the spit (didn't work...he flushed before I even thought about taking his picture!), We found these cute little running otter tracks in the sand. By the way, the tide was sooo low, I've never seen it that low. So, instead of the osprey photo, I got one of the peeps foraging.
Later, at the marsh, it was kind of getting dark-ish (plus I forgot the flash for the big lens) so I took some flower shots instead of birds. The sunset and clouds were really pretty, but the marsh is surrounding by manmade stuff like power lines that I don't really care for so much, so getting landscape shots is not too easy. I did get a few (another post) that came out all right.
Nifty clouds over the bay. Today would have been a great kayak day...had high tide been at a better time! Speaking of manmade stuff, I actually like this photo below. The sky was textbook midnight blue, a few minutes after sunset and this lamp post had just turned on. Made for a cool look, I love that blue!

Things That Go BLOOM!

Went to the marsh this evening (pretty cool sunset, too, but I'll save that for later)...happy to see evidence of spring out and about! Abc Wednesday (F) and Color Carnival, Today's Flower

Mice Friends II

Mice Friends! I found these guys by the tent, while camping in the middle of nowhere Hell's Canyon, Idaho a couple years ago. There were 2 adults, 4 babies. Whenever the sun came out, they were all huddled up by the entrance of their humble abode, soaking up the heat/sun. Freaking precious! This is from my point and click by the way- they let me get right up next to them. I actually was able to pet their heads while they were sleeping. It's true. If you want to see some other (even cuter, dare I say) mice friends, check out this link from this summer...some videos of them hoarding almonds. Macro Monday, Nature Notes, Camera critters

Trinidad and Tobago Day 11: Crown-wearing Men and A Drunk

We stocked up on grub at the grocery store since we were returning the rental car later in the afternoon. We went to Castara to our favorite beach one last time for some quality beach and sun time. Remember this is the a pretty low populated beach. At one point, a guy wearing a crown and gown/dress and many gold chains approached me and offered a back massage. This was horrifyingly awkward of course. I gave a very confused 'no' and he started talking some crazy talk.
On our way back to Crown Point, we stopped to check email. The ol' internet web wasn't working so while we were waiting around, we checked out the T&T newspaper. Under the world section we saw a photo of Eureka Natural Foods (our store of choice) with everything off the shelves. Why? Ah because there had been a 6.5 earthquake. So, that was pretty startling news and I quickly began to freak out wondering if our apartment was destroyed and if Hayduke the cat was okay at the cat resort.
We took naps after this and later went to get a beer at a nice little bar. (This is a lovely story). There were many people eating but only one guy at the bar. I recognized this guy from a few nights ago, when we were walking back to the apt. He was staggering drunk in the sidewalk trying to hitch a ride.

So, anyway, said drunkard was at the bar. We ensued in a bit of conversation. He claimed to live here 6 months out of the year, the rest of the time in England. He asked where we were from, we told him CA. (It was soon clear he hated all Americans). Not to delve into too many details, but he started feeding outright nonsensical lies about crap. Some issues like mosquitos, dengue fever, wetlands, and birds came up. Things got ugly. Something I said made him leave (hm, perhaps my sharp tongue) and the bartenders rejoiced. Apparently he has caused a few problems previously and the owner pretty much hates him, so he was happy I was rather blunt to the guy. So, we ended up having a couple more beers than we would have and chatted with the extremely nice people who worked there.
