Black-necked Stilts

This is an older photo (taken in July 2008, not long after I got the 500mm), in Southeastern Oregon, where Zac and I were doing some bat field work at the time. I had forgotten about this shot until I saw it recently at my parent's house - my mom has the color version framed as an 11x14. It's one of the first bird shots I remember being pleased with (there's a series of them, but this is my favorite). The two birds had stopped foraging for a split second and stood next to each other, lookin' all fancy pants and stuff. Weekend Reflections, Black and White Weekend

500mm??!! Yowzer! Great monochrome.

It's really good to go back thru old photos, I find stuff I passed by the first time and they look pretty good.

This is a fantastic photo with the birds and the reflections, and the black and white definitely works superbly here. I'd have been pleased with this too, it's better than any bird shot I've ever captured!

I can see why you would be pleased with this. With the way they are posed and the reflection, it is a perfect compostion.
A 500mm lens? I would love to have one of those. With my 300mm the birds have to walk up to me if I want a good shot. That doesn't happen very often.

Is this 500mm a prime lens or the 50-500mm Sigma mentioned in your About Me section? I've been struggling with a 400mm Sigma and just about gave up on it, but have discovered a couple of "rescue" techniques in photo-shopping. From some of the information I've read this is not unusual to have to re-work digital camera images when using long lenses. As I've mentioned before, your images are motivating me into keep working at it. Thank you.

Such sharp looking birds. 'Fancy pants' is right!

I was thinking the same thing as the first commenter - 500mm?
this is a fabulous photo. I would feel really really good about this if I had taken it. If you were choreographing a dance, it couldn't have been better. It's perfection.

Beautiful shot. It looks great in black and white. They remind me of sandpipers.

This reminds me of some shots that I took several months ago. I should start looking at my old photos.
