The Gypsum Goodness Continues (Day 22)

10 September.

I was up at 0530 and watched the sun slowly make it's appearance...it put on an excellent show. Sunrise at White Sands: highly recommended. I walked around for a couple hours with the camera, watching the shadows come and go over the dunes. Each direction looked totally different with the changing light on the sand.
Later on, we hiked back out to the car and decided to stay and play another day. So we did the 5 mile loop in the dunes, (saw a handful of the bleached earless lizards (photo at the top) but only one sat still for me, the rest were awfully hyperactive), gorged on lunch and then went 'sledding.' That's fun stuff. Later we hiked back to the tents and I watched a beetle eat a sesame stick for 45 minutes. I was enthralled by him and could hear him chewing. I'm so easily entertained. The smoothness of the sand without any footprints is really nice. I would enjoy going into this area. I imagine temps were better in the fall.i ave never heard a beetle chew, I would like to see some pics of that.

Happy new year Jill!
The scenery looks amazing here. Sounds like the beetle enjoyed his (or her) snack.

Your pictures brought back so many memories of my visit there years ago. And, of course, as always your captures are superb! Such amazing sights. Nope, never heard a beetle chew either, but wouldn't mind adding that to my list of things to discover!! Hope your new year is off to a great start. Look forward to more of your fantastic photography in the coming year! Enjoy!

Fabulous! Love the photos of the dunes, the first one almost looks as if the shadow is an ocean or water. Really nicely done. You're amazing.

I can relate to you watching the beetle. Several times in the desert I've spent over an hour watching one particle ant, following him to see how far he travels away from the nest and then back, carrying whatever prize he's found. It is very interesting when you reduce yourself to their world.
