Mexican Jays

Lots of Mexican Jays (formerly the Gray-breasted Jay) in Big Bend National Park (West Texas). We found some snarfing and caching pine nuts in a wash along one of the trails. I was able to sneak up on them and in the process found some serious bear scat and some well defined game trails. No bear sighting though.
On a different trail, there was a solitary jay hunkering down because of the wind. (you can see he's all fluffy and ruffled in the picture below) I was able to get some full frame head shots as he posed for his glamour photos. I'm pretty sure he's a model. I shake my head in wonderment at all the beautiful birds I have never seen and that is exactly the rare good fortune we have living in the only time in history where we can share such special moments so freely with one another. This is a great study of the Mexican Jay to be sure. The bluish glint in the eye of the Jay in your initial picture is a brilliant piece of photography. Congratulations on a timeless shot!

I must agree - you are a master of light and color. There is always something beautiful to see if one looks for it. I love those pics of White Sands. But most of all? I love your profile photo.

What a cool color and great details! I recently acquired a 200mm f2.8, but I've already learned that isn't going to be long enough to get up close and personal like this!

I am so envious of your adventures in Big Bend. I'm only 400 miles from there, but it isn't likely I'll make it that far. Maybe one day. In the meantime, I'll just have to enjoy it through your wonderful blog! ~karen

Your animal photos are motivating me to get out there a practice more. I took your advice and used my monopod which was much better. Thanks for that. Now if I could only become friends with my camera. My last blog post explains that, with only a couple turkey shots worthy of the near 100 pictures I took. Going out again today to practice, practice, practice. I'd love to spend a day with you as I could learn so much, but I'm quite satisfied with the online tutoring.

I love the sense of humor and playfulness that you use with your amazing photos...I think when you are out among bears, it's probably good to have a sense of humor..or maybe not..not sure on that one. I love the jay...Michelle

Awesome shots of the Mexican Jay Jill! That portrait shot is spectacular! I think you have some animal magnetism to bring the birds in so close like you do.
